Your smile is one of the first things that people notice about you—meaning that if you’re unhappy with your teeth due to staining, you might be wondering what your treatment options are. When it comes to teeth whitening, dentists are often capable of providing the best possible results; however, the emergence of some pretty interesting techniques and DIY whitening methods might be causing you to feel a little uncertain about the best course of action. Here’s more about how one of these DIY methods, involving turmeric, might not be the best option for whitening your smile.

What Is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a bright yellow, sometimes orangish, powder that originates from Southeast Asia and belongs to the ginger family. It’s a completely natural product that has a rich, peppery taste and adds a unique flavor to food; however, it’s also been used as an herbal and healing remedy for centuries.

Does Turmeric Provide Any Oral Health Benefits?

Research shows that turmeric plants exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties; all of which are incredibly useful for preventing and managing oral health issues such as gum disease. Other studies have found that turmeric can remove plaque and bacteria just as effectively as store-bought mouthwash. Additionally, it can even relieve minor toothaches! It’s worth mentioning that turmeric cannot effectively replace your oral hygiene routine, though—instead, it should be used to supplement your regimen.

Can Turmeric Be Used for Teeth Whitening?

Turmeric is a well-known remedy for home dental care with several benefits, but according to some dentists, public figures, and celebrities, it can also be used to whiten teeth. However, there are no studies yet that specifically analyze turmeric’s ability to whiten teeth. Some compare turmeric’s whitening potential to that of activated charcoal or baking soda; despite this, the American Dental Association (ADA) mentions there’s no scientific evidence that turmeric can effectively turn your teeth white, and all of the current evidence is anecdotal.

How Can I Whiten My Teeth?

Even though there are several DIY whitening methods that seem convenient and effective, all of them fall short compared to the treatment that a professional can provide. That said, if you’re looking to safely and noticeably whiten your smile, you should visit your dentist. They can provide either in-office whitening, performed by their own hands, or send you home with a kit containing everything you need to whiten on your own schedule. Both methods are proven to work, and the results are absolutely gorgeous!

At the present, turmeric is not considered a viable means for teeth whitening, nor can it be considered a replacement for general oral health care. That said, it can still be used to enhance your oral health!
