As Halloween is creeping up, you may be more enticed to watch your favorite horror movies or go to a haunted house. As exhilarating as these may be, something that can be far scarier are oral health problems. They can cause a wide range of complications, but thankfully, you can stop them with routine cleanings and good at-home dental hygiene. In the meantime, here are some frightening statistics about smiles you should know.
1.) Tooth Decay Can Happen to Anyone
When you think of problems with teeth, you likely imagine cavities first. In fact, they are one of the most common health problems in the world! Decay can happen in any tooth in the mouth, affecting patients of all ages.
They don’t discriminate, so it’s important to keep up with brushing and flossing. You can reduce your chances of them, but it may still be a possibility. It’s believed that 91% of adults in the U.S. have had at least one cavity before, with over a quarter of them currently having theirs untreated.
2.) Gum Disease Is More Common Than You May Think
Oral health issues may only make you think of problems with your teeth, but your gums may be at risk as well. Periodontal (gum) disease is a condition that may be more widespread than you imagine. It affects over half of adults over 30 years old in the U.S. This percentage goes even higher for seniors! When it’s left untreated, it can even lead to tooth loss.
3.) Tooth Loss Can Occur at Any Age
Missing a tooth is often associated with older adults. When someone is younger, it might not even come to mind that they could lose one! However, it can happen for a wide range of reasons. Poor oral hygiene, facial injuries, and accidents can lead to someone’s teeth failing. Recent studies have shown that 180 million U.S. adults have lost at least one of their teeth, with a quarter of this number missing all of them.
Although you may be worried about the things above, there are things you can do to avoid being a part of the statistic! Be sure you brush twice and floss once a day. That way, you get rid of any harmful bacteria that can attack your teeth and gums. Sticking to your routine dental appointments can help ensure you prevent any problems as well. That way, you keep the scares of the season to Halloween!
